Senior’s Trip to Croke Park
There were scenes of great celebration in Croke Park on Tuesday January 11th when the boys from Belgrove Senior Boys School won the Corn Kitterick (Division 1) for the first time in the school’s history. Sweet indeed was the taste of victory considering that it was the 5th occasion in eight years that the school contested this premier division final! Previous defeats to St. Marys, Rathfarnham (2003), John Paul’s, Malahide (2005), Knocklyon (2007 & 2009) served to strengthen the resolve of the Belgrove boys as they comprehensively won with a scoreline of 4-8 to 0-7 against their opponents St. Brigid’s, Castleknock. The panel of twenty-four players were comprised mainly of Clontarf GAA club players with representation from Scoil Uí Chonaill, St. Vincents and Na Fianna. Many of the boys will now turn their attention to hurling and dreams of a possible double perhaps??
Junior Football Team
Trials for this squad took place in the second week of September. In excess of sixty boys from fourth and fifth classes competed for a place on this year’s panel. Eventually twenty-six boys were selected and preparation for our first encounter began in earnest the day before our first game! We competed in the Primary Touch North Division One competition of Cumann na mBunscol. The statistics read played five, won two, lost two and drew one. It was very successful in that the boys’ performances improved with every game. In fact both defeats were of the narrowest margin. St. Brigids, Castleknock invited the school to participate in two friendly matches. This gave us the opportunity to invite many of the boys who didn’t make the original squad. It was great to see so many boys wear the school jersey. Our hosts provided some light refreshment after the games.
Many thanks to all the parents for their provision of transport to the matches and their large support at our homes games. Thanks to Clontarf GAA for organising nets and flags at these games.
