The school has been entering teams in the event for the past 5 or 6 years and Belgrove has had great success individually and team wise. The competition was postponed in November 2009 due to bad weather and the event was run instead on Thursday February 25th 2010.

The course was thronged with hundreds of children – boys and girls – full of excitement and full of hope that they would do themselves and their school proud in the races ahead.
There were eight different races, one at each age level (U- 10, U-11, U-12 U-13) for boys and for girls.

The four cross-country teams did remarkably well.
The two younger teams (U-10 and U-11) won silver medals and the two older teams (U-12 and U-13) won gold. There were also very strong individual performances in the following categories:

Senior Athletics Team

The school has been entering teams in the Athletic Championships for over 30 years. The boys have trials in a wide variety of events – sprints, relays, high jump, long jump, hurdles, middle distance races – and train regularly for 6-8 weeks prior to the sports day.
Last year’s championships took place on Wednesday June 3 (sprints/relays) and Thursday June 4 (field events).

Under 12 runner, Barry Davis, was unable to run because he was unwell on the day but Shane Power stood in for him at short notice and ran a great race, coming in 5th in a very strong field of 40+ athletes. Other athletes on the day also put in great performances but just missed out on medals.

Luke O Higgins jumped nearly 4 meters in the Under 12 Long Jump and was unfortunate to come up against particularly tough competition. Similarly David Byrne and Sean McKeon in the High Jump gave very good personal performances but bowed out just before the final shake-up for medals.

Our return to Santry the next day was for the sprints and relays. Our Under 10 team came 3rd in the relay race bringing a welcome clutch of medals back to the school. There was no luck with the other teams nor with the individual sprinters. They all gave of their best, however, and represented the school proudly.
